Today, The Platinum Mask channel would like to introduce Destinie York for a conversation.

Hey! Please explain to the audience what you’re promoting.

I am a 3 year self-taught makeup artist specializing in soft glams.

What was the biggest obstacle in your journey and how did you overcome it?

The biggest obstacle in my journey was overcoming my own self doubt and being consistent. I started my business when I was a sophomore in college so balancing 15 hours while having a full time job and also being involved on campus made me take many breaks and often doubts that I would be able to make my business a successful thing. To overcome this, I ran many specials, giveaways, photoshoots, literally anything I could do to get clientele.

Is there anything you wished you would have known earlier in your journey?

I wish I knew to believe in myself earlier. Makeup has BEEN a passion of mine and if I would have trusted myself and my passion, it is inevitable to where I could have been today.

Do you have any favorite spots in the Dallas-Fort Worth area?

YES! My favorite food spots is Campisi’s, Flying Fish, Wing Bucket, and anything Mexican/Tex-Mex related.

Were there any major challenges due to the covid-19 pandemic? How did you overcome them?

Covid was probably one of the hardest thing any entrepreneur had to overcome and I wish I handled it very different. With the world practically being shut down and that being peak of when I started gaining clientele, I didn’t know how I would continue doing makeup and if it was even a possible thing. I wish I believed in myself and felt more confident in my looks to post myself more during that time. I didn’t really do anything makeup related during that time and because everyone was at home, I felt that could have been my time to really grow my following. I just continued to pray during that time that if God let me make it through covid, I will go even harder in my business and that’s exactly what I did.

What was your upbringing like and did you discover your passion early on?

My upbringing was full of love, laughter, and family. I have a very close tight knit family and the way my family always supported me growing definitely gave me confidence to start my business. My mom is the best mom ever, literally. She raised me to be strong, independent, driven, ambitious, and ultimately the skills she and my dad instilled in me is the reason I am who I am now. My mom, aunts, and cousins all have allowed me to do their makeup whether it’s for practice or for an actual event and even now still ask me to do their makeup so the continued love and support is still happening. I discovered my passion for makeup early on. I’ve always seen my mom every morning put on her mascara and eyeshadow (because brows wasn’t popular back in the early 2000s) and from the age of 5, I have been dancer dancing for a dance team so at every performance I would have to put on makeup and once I hit that stage, I turned into beast mode. That’s how great makeup made me feel and overtime the love for the art just continued to grow.
